Supernatural series Carmilla, winner of the MIPTV Brand Content of the Year award, is a global phenomenon. “Spirit Sisters” Elise Bauman & Natasha Negovanlis explain why in this exclusive interview!
Produced by Shaftesbury, with executive producer U by Kotex®, Carmilla is a scripted transmedia digital series with over 71 million views on YouTube channel KindaTV, the largest scripted YouTube channel for millennials in Canada.
Carmilla puts a modern spin on the cult classic gothic vampire novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Meshing the vlog format aesthetic with scripted storytelling, Carmilla follows the adventures of university student Laura Hollis (Elise Bauman) whose world is turned upside down after a vampire, Carmilla Karnstein (Natasha Negovanlis), moves into her dorm room.
Carmilla is developed and produced by creator and producer Shaftesbury, in association with U by Kotex®. It was co-created by Shaftesbury and award-winning playwright Jordan Hall, written by Hall, and directed by Spencer Maybee.
Carmilla has been viewed in 193 countries and translated in over 20 languages by fans.
In addition to being released digitally, Shaftesbury and Cineplex Entertainment partnered for a nation-wide stunt event screening series with The Carmilla Movie playing for one night only at 35 Cineplex theatres across Canada.
In January 2018, The Carmilla Movie made its world television premiere on Hollywood Suite, preceded by an 18-hour marathon of Seasons 1 through 3 of the web series, presented by U by Kotex.
Brand licensing deals include a collection of customizable pendants and rings inspired by the series and its characters from Jewlr.com, as well t-shirts with apparel licensee Mighty Fine.
KCP Loft, a division of Corus Entertainment, has optioned the world publishing rights. Kim Turrisi (Venice: The Series, Just a Normal Tuesday) has been named as the author of the adaptation, which is slated for publication in Spring 2019.
